A colleague and good friend of mine, who runs a large customer services operation, often says ?our customers don?t buy products, they buy peace of mind and time back?. From customers I hear all the time that admin, bookkeeping, finances, payroll are a necessary pain.

Carnivorous plants feature complex mechanisms to survive in habitats poor in nutrients: trapping systems help them to lure, catch, kill, and digest small prey animals (mainly insects) and to take up the resulting nutrients. Traps that move are termed 'active', and such active systems are currently being investigated in the Plant Biomechanics Group of the Botanic Garden Freiburg, led by Prof. Thomas Speck.
In the PhD project of Simon Poppinga, the researchers show for the first time the trapping action of the particular sundew Drosera glanduligera, which was accomplished in close collaboration with the private cultivators Siegfried and Irmgard Hartmeyer. The spectacular capture movement has been investigated biophysically, and the findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Sundews are commonly known for their trap leafs being covered with sticky tentacles to which small prey animals stick to and become wrapped within minutes up to hours. The Round-Leaved Sundew Drosera rotundifolia, which is native to nutrient-poor bogs also in the Black Forest, possesses such a flypaper-trap. Additionally to these glue-tentacles, Australian Drosera glanduligera features non-sticky snap-tentacles that bend towards the trap centre within 75 milliseconds after mechanical stimulation, which is faster than the snap-trapping action of the famous Venus Flytrap. The function of these tentacles was subject to speculation until now. It could be shown that the snap-tentacles catapult incautious prey animals onto the sticky trap leaf, and that this sundew hence possesses a combined catapult-flypaper-trap.
Carnivorous plants enjoy great popularity worldwide. Although the trapping mechanism described here can surely be termed one of the most spectacular plant movements, only few persons will be able to see it with their own eyes due to the very tough cultivation and short life span of the plant. Astronomers have used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to find evidence our Milky Way Galaxy is embedded in an enormous halo of hot gas that extends for hundreds of thousands of light years. The estimated mass of the halo is comparable to the mass of all the stars in the galaxy.
If the size and mass of this gas halo is confirmed, it also could be an explanation for what is known as the "missing baryon" problem for the galaxy.
Baryons are particles, such as protons and neutrons, that make up more than 99.9 percent of the mass of atoms found in the cosmos. Measurements of extremely distant gas halos and galaxies indicate the baryonic matter present when the universe was only a few billion years old represented about one-sixth the mass and density of the existing unobservable, or dark, matter. In the current epoch, about 10 billion years later, a census of the baryons present in stars and gas in our galaxy and nearby galaxies shows at least half the baryons are unaccounted for.
In a recent study, a team of five astronomers used data from Chandra, the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton space observatory and Japan's Suzaku satellite to set limits on the temperature, extent and mass of the hot gas halo. Chandra observed eight bright X-ray sources located far beyond the galaxy at distances of hundreds of millions of light-years. The data revealed X-rays from these distant sources are absorbed selectively by oxygen ions in the vicinity of the galaxy. The scientists determined the temperature of the absorbing halo is between 1 million and 2.5 million kelvins, or a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the sun.
Other studies have shown that the Milky Way and other galaxies are embedded in warm gas with temperatures between 100,000 and 1 million kelvins. Studies have indicated the presence of a hotter gas with a temperature greater than 1 million kelvins. This new research provides evidence the hot gas halo enveloping the Milky Way is much more massive than the warm gas halo.
"We know the gas is around the galaxy, and we know how hot it is," said Anjali Gupta, lead author of The Astrophysical Journal paper describing the research. "The big question is, how large is the halo, and how massive is it?"
To begin to answer this question, the authors supplemented Chandra data on the amount of absorption produced by the oxygen ions with XMM-Newton and Suzaku data on the X-rays emitted by the gas halo. They concluded that the mass of the gas is equivalent to the mass in more than 10 billion suns, perhaps as large as 60 billion suns.
"Our work shows that, for reasonable values of parameters and with reasonable assumptions, the Chandra observations imply a huge reservoir of hot gas around the Milky Way," said co-author Smita Mathur of Ohio State University in Columbus. "It may extend for a few hundred thousand light-years around the Milky Way or it may extend farther into the surrounding local group of galaxies. Either way, its mass appears to be very large."
The estimated mass depends on factors such as the amount of oxygen relative to hydrogen, which is the dominant element in the gas. Nevertheless, the estimation represents an important step in solving the case of the missing baryons, a mystery that has puzzled astronomers for more than a decade.
Although there are uncertainties, the work by Gupta and colleagues provides the best evidence yet that the galaxy's missing baryons have been hiding in a halo of million-kelvin gas that envelopes the galaxy. The estimated density of this halo is so low that similar halos around other galaxies would have escaped detection.

Although there are uncertainties, the work by Gupta and colleagues provides the best evidence yet that the galaxy's missing baryons have been hiding in a halo of million-kelvin gas that envelopes the galaxy. The estimated density of this halo is so low that similar halos around other galaxies would have escaped detection.

After a drop in the ranking of best colleges, some Ohio State students and faculty said they don?t think the rankings influence prospective students much.
OSU dropped one spot to No. 56 in ?U.S. News & World Report?s? recently released list of the 2013 best colleges in the nation.
Within the 281 national universities on ?U.S. World & News Report?s? list, five Big Ten colleges were ranked higher than OSU. Northwestern University, The University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, Penn State, and University of Illinois were placed at No. 12, No. 29, No. 41, and a tie for No. 46, respectively.
The three highest ranked universities on the national list were Harvard, Princeton and Yale.
OSU is tied at No. 56 with Northeastern University in Boston.
Dolan Evanovich, the vice president for strategic enrollment planning, said despite various shifts in OSU?s ranking in the past, application numbers have grown to more than 28,000 applications from 16,000 to 17,000 applications in previous years.
?In any given year, your ranking could go up one or two spaces or down one or two space,? Evanovich said. ?So in the big scheme of things, you just have to keep it in perspective.?
The factors that measure academic quality for the rankings include peer assessment, retention and graduation of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate performance, according to ?U.S. News and World Report?s? website, The data for the list was gathered in winter 2011, spring 2012 and summer 2012.
Evanovich said students typically focus their decision on the quality and cost of different universities.
According to the ?U.S. News & World Report? ranking summary for each university, Northwestern charges $43,779 in tuition and fees per academic year, Michigan charges $13,437 for in-state students and $39,109 for out-of-state students, and Wisconsin?s in-state tuition is $10,384 and $26,634 for out-of-state.
Penn State?s tuition for an academic year is $16,444 in-state and $28,746 for out-of-state, and Illinois charges $14,428 in-state and $28,570 for out-of-state. OSU?s tuition is $10,037 for in-state students and $25,445 for out-of-state students.
Evanovich said while he feels the rankings are not necessarily ignored by students, they are not usually the main focus.
?I think it is something families consider initially, maybe early in the process,? Evanovich said. ?But when they make their decision to apply or to enroll, it?s more based on the strength of the academic program and the opportunities students have when they are here and when they graduate.?
Joe Wille, a first-year in biology from Michigan, chose OSU based on the atmosphere rather than its specific ranking.
?I think it would look better to graduate from a higher school, but I think anything in the top 100 would be a very good school,? Wille said.
Sarah ModicBradley, a second-year in business, said she personally took the rankings into consideration.
?I definitely wanted to go to a school that had a high ranking, not some unknown college, so I did pick it based off that,? ModicBradley said. ?I mean, I applied to all schools in Ohio, so Ohio State was definitely the highest ranked.?
