What To Pack For A Safari Trip - Business Insider

Before taking off on a 10-day press trip to visit safari camps in Tanzania, I worried about having to pack for such a long trip in such a small bag.Since I was traveling on small charter planes, I had to limit my luggage to a 10 x 12 x 24-inch bag that weighed no more than 33 pounds.
The packing list provided by the Africa Adventure Company, which organized my tour, was pretty comprehensive, and you can find it at the bottom of this post.
There were a few items I was thrilled I had with me, a few I wished I'd thought to bring, and a couple that I probably should have left at home.
Things to pack:
Socks and underwear?? most safari camps offer daily laundry service, but bring enough socks and underwear for the entire trip, especially if you are jumping from camp to camp and don't have time to wait for laundry.
Zip-off pants ? they may not be stylish, but they're incredibly practical in the plains, where temperatures fluctuate widely. There were days where I'd start off wearing a fleece and hat at 6 a.m., and change into shorts and a tank top by lunch.
Light hiking boots ? most of the packing lists I consulted said to bring an old pair of sneakers, but I was glad I wore a lightweight pair of hiking boots. They covered my ankles, were comfortable during walking safaris, and hid the dust nicely.
Detergent travel packs?? for religious reasons, some camps won't wash women's undergarments, so don't get caught off guard.
High-SPF sunscreen ? I normally max out at SPF 15 on the beach, but the sun in Tanzania was strong, even under the roof of a safari vehicle. I used half a tube of SPF 50 and wished I'd brought an even stronger sunscreen.
Insect repellent ? most safari camps are well-stocked with bug spray, but I'd recommend a small bottle of repellent with 100-percent Deet, especially for people traveling in the rainy season.
Headlamp or flashlight ? handy for navigating to the bathroom at night, or for reading in bed. Once I was safely in my mosquito netting at night, the last thing I wanted to do was jump out of bed to turn off the light.
A paperback book or e-reader ? you won't have much downtime for reading during the day, but it was nice to have something to read at night before I fell asleep?? you probably won't find a TV at any safari camp.
Camera-cleaning kit ? make sure you pack a lens wipe and cleaning fluid in your camera bag. Your equipment will get dusty in no time. And throw in some spare camera batteries too. The last thing you want is to run out of juice on a game drive.
Things to leave at home:
Sandals ? flip-flops are OK if you want them to wear in your room, but I never unpacked my sandals. I wore my hiking boots during the day, and at night it was too cold for open-toed shoes.
Make-up and dresses ? leave them home. Make-up is heavy to carry around, and no one at a safari camp dresses up, even at dinner time. Plus, the nights are cold and pants are a better bet.
Bright-colored clothing ? I'd read before leaving that I should pack neutral colors like tan and khaki, and I was glad I did. Bright colors attract animals during game drives, and dark colors attract bugs.
Snacks ? I always travel with a box of granola bars, but that was a mistake on safari. Snacks?? even packaged ones?? attract animals, and they'll sniff them out in your luggage.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? Amid the ash, broken glass and melted sewing machines at what is left of the Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory, there are piles of blue, red and off-white children's shorts bearing Wal-Mart's Faded Glory brand. Shorts from hip-hop star Sean Combs' ENYCE label lay on the floor, along with a hooded Mickey Mouse sweatshirt from Disney.
An Associated Press reporter searching the Bangladesh factory Wednesday found these and other clothes, including sweaters from the French company Teddy Smith and the Scottish company Edinburgh Woollen Mill, among the equipment charred in the fire that killed 112 workers on Saturday. He also found entries in account books indicating that the factory took orders to produce clothes for Disney, Sears and other Western brands.

The fire has elevated awareness of something labor groups, retailers and governments have known for years: Bangladesh's fast-growing garment industry ? second only to China's in exports ? is rife with dangerous workplaces. More than 300 workers there have died in fires since 2006.
Police on Wednesday arrested three factory officials suspected of locking in the workers who died in Saturday's fire, the deadliest in the South Asian country's less than 35-year history of exporting clothing.
Local police chief Habibur Rahman said the three will be questioned amid reports that many workers trying to escape the blaze had been locked inside. He said the owner of the factory was not among those arrested.
The three officials were arrested Wednesday at their homes in Savar, the Dhaka suburb where the factory is located. Rahman did not identify the officials or give their job status.
About 1,400 workers worked at the plant, some 70 percent of them women. Most are from the north, the poorest region of Bangladesh.
Workers who survived the fire say exit doors were locked, and a fire official has said that far fewer people would have died if there had been even one emergency exit. Of the dead, 53 bodies were burned so badly they could not be identified; they were buried anonymously.
The fire started on the ground floor, where a factory worker named Nasima said stacks of yarn and clothes blocked part of the stairway.
Nasima, who uses only one name, and other workers said that when they tried to flee, managers told them to go back to their work stations, but they were ignored.
Dense smoke filled the stairway, making it hard to see, and when the lights went out the workers were left in total darkness. Another worker, Mohammad Rajib, said some people used their cellphones to light their way.
"Everyone was screaming for help," Nasima said. "Total chaos, panic and screaming. Everyone was trying to escape and come out. I was pulling the shirt of a man. I fainted and when I woke up I found myself lying on the road outside the factory.
"I don't know how I survived."
Rajib said the factory conducted a fire drill just three days before the fire broke out, but no one used the fire extinguishers. "Only a selected group of workers are trained to use the extinguishers. Others have no idea how to use them," he said.
The AP reporter who examined the factory Wednesday saw dozens of fire extinguishers with tags indicating they were inspected early this month. Many appeared unused.
Workers expressed support for the factory owner, Delwar Hossain. Rajib said he is "a gentle man" who heeded workers when they protested for more pay and against rough behavior by some managers.
"He took action and fired some of them," he said. "He did not sack any worker. He told us: 'You are my people. If you survive, I will survive.'"
Most the fire's devastation took place on the second and third floors. Sewing and embroidery machines and tables burned to ashes, ceiling fans melted and floor and wall tiles were broken, apparently because of excessive heat. Thick black ash covers everything in the upper floors of the eight-story building.
Much of the clothing on the lower floors was incinerated. Nightgowns, children's shorts, pants, jackets and sweat shirts were strewn about, piled up in some places, boxed in others. Cartons of kids' hooded sweaters, off-white with red and black print, were marked "Disney Pixar."
Among the Disney garments was a gray sweatshirt emblazoned with the image of Lightning McQueen, the star of Pixar's "Cars" movies.
A pair of blue ENYCE shorts was still on a sewing machine.
There were also at least four register books listing buyers including Wal-Mart, Disney, Sears and other companies. Also listed was Li & Fung, a Hong Kong-based buying house that is among the biggest suppliers of garment products from Bangladesh. Li & Fung issued a statement Monday saying it placed orders at the factory for just one company, Kids Headquarters, and that the value of those orders totaled just $111,000.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Interior Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir have said arson is suspected. Police say they have not ruled out sabotage.
Wal-Mart had received an audit deeming the factory "high risk" last year, said it had decided to stop doing business with Tazreen, but that a supplier subcontracted work to the factory anyway. Wal-Mart said it stopped working with that supplier on Monday.
Calls made to The Walt Disney Company and to Sears Holdings were not immediately returned.
Local TV reports said about 3,000 garment workers held protests over the fire Wednesday, blocking roads and throwing stones at some factories and vehicles. It was the third straight day of demonstrations.
Police used batons to disperse the protesters, but no injuries were immediately reported.
According to local television, most factories in the area closed after opening briefly because of the protests ? a common tactic to avoid violence.

MIAMI (AP) ? LeBron James is atop the NBA's jersey-sales list once again.
The Miami Heat star has the league's hottest-selling jersey, marking the third time the NBA's reigning MVP and Finals MVP has held that distinction. James was No. 4 in the most recent rankings, released in April.
Since then, all he's done is win his third MVP award, a second Olympic gold medal and help the Heat win the NBA championship ? the franchise's second and his first.
"It's an honor to be No. 1," said James, who last had the league's best-selling jersey in April 2011.
The league released its latest sales-rankings list on Wednesday, with the New York Knicks leading the team-sales category for the first time since December 2004.
On the players' list, Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant checked in at No. 2, six spots higher than where he was in April and likely buoyed by the Thunder reaching the NBA Finals. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers has the league's No. 3-selling jersey, followed by New York's Carmelo Anthony, Chicago's Derrick Rose, Boston's Rajon Rondo, Miami's Dwyane Wade, the Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin, the Lakers' Dwight Howard and the Clippers' Chris Paul at No. 10.

?Email This Post Malawi will never stop to amuse me. It?s hilarious how people mix everything, politics, human rights, family/personal issues and current affairs.With the current economic crisis?hitting?hard, everyone can claim to be whatever and whosoever he/she want.
I remember a couple of months ago people were so excited criticising the late president, professor Bingu Wa Mutharika when he refused to suspend an anti-homosexuality law so that Malawi could be granted aid and funding that was suspended because of the law banning gays and minority rights groups in the country.
The late Mutharika and many others who followed him were called names, criticised and demonstrations followed as the country?s economic woes continued when they insisted on maintaining Malawi culture and norms.
Everyone who supported the gay banning motion was a ?gold digger? according to some seasoned activists who instead of helping to find ways and solutions to help Malawi?s shrinking economy were always criticising any regime in power.

What exactly did they want? ?Why opposing everything? Why don?t they just come in the open and declare your political ambitions and join the opposition so that maybe the nation should see if you are capable of leading and not ruling in the roaming elections.
When the DPP regime was arresting people, activists were on the fore front criticising the government for its wrong doing which was very right.
And those arrested got the support from almost all the corners of the nation, everyone was there for them just because they all believed in them and were eager to see results from them in the hard economic times.
They were the people?s only hope, but ?beware how you take away hope from another human being.??

Who made the wrong decision on economy between the two? Muthalika or Banda? Malawi activists know better I guess.

Homosexual acts are illegal in Malawi. Section 153 prohibits ?unnatural offences?.?Section 156concerning??public decency??is used to punish homosexual acts.
Tourists who commit homosexuality with locals can be prosecuted under?Section 156?and expelled as??undesirable aliens?.
In late December 2009, a trans-woman and a man, Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza, were arrested for holding a traditional ?engagement? party.
They were imprisoned in Blantyre, were denied bail and stood trial. On 18 May, they were found guilty, although there has been an international outcry from LGBT solidarity groups.
On 29 May 2010, then President Bingu wa Mutharika pardoned both individuals.
On 18 May 2012, President Joyce Banda announced intention to repeal the law criminalizing same-sex sexual activity. On 5 November, a moratorium was issued on the law pending possible repeal.
Current the police in Malawi have been ordered not to arrest or prosecute homosexuals until parliament has debated the issue, said Ralph Kasambara.
At present, homosexual acts carry a maximum sentence of 14 years in jail.
Some Western leaders have suggested they would cut aid to African countries failing to recognise gay rights.
Homosexuality is illegal in most African nations and remains a controversial topic in Malawi?s traditionally conservative society.
One of Malawi?s most influential traditional leaders, Chief Kaomba, had urged the government not to let parliament change its laws on homosexuality.
?This is against our culture,? he said.
Soon after the news broke out about the suspension of anti-gay rights, some activists petitioned the president to reverse the decision, yet they are the same people who were pressing the late Wa Muthalika to legalise gay marriages in Malawi.
Most of Malawi?s activists are attention seekers, trying to dig gold with their mouths which is tarnishing every regime?s leadership in Malawi.
If it is money they are after, its better if they find other ways of generating money other than blackmailing and critic.

The cool accomplishment of Skyfall, 23rd in the Broccoli franchise, is that it seems a necessary, rather than mandatory, addition to the year's popular culture.
Among the most ambitious imaginings of Bond to date: dark, supple, and punctuated with moments of unanticipated visual brilliance.
Mendes' approach to action is classical and elegant - no manic editing and blurry unintelligible images here - but what makes the movie special is the attention he pays his actors.
"Skyfall" is a different kind of Bond movie, one that works just fine on its own terms, but a steady diet of this might kill the franchise. One "Skyfall" is enough.
Sam Mendes has done a magnificent job, creating both a relevant and timeless entry into the Bond canon, while deftly adding homages to the series' past.
...tough and grim but still spry ... feels like something of a rearguard action in the case of the British Empire.
Sometimes the old ways are the best. This is a theme and repeated line running throughout the new James Bond film Skyfall and never has it been more true.

16 die in Pakistan after drinking cough syrup
LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) ? Sixteen people have died in Pakistan after drinking cough syrup suspected of being toxic, police said Monday after three additional victims expired in hospital.
All those affected by the syrup were drug addicts who apparently drank it to get high, said police officer Multan Khan.
Khan said they died at various hospitals in the eastern city of Lahore over the past three days. Two people are still being treated at the city's main hospital.
Police arrested the owners of three drug stores where the cough syrup was sold and sent a sample for analysis to determine whether it was toxic, Khan added.
Elsewhere in the country, a bomb hidden in a cement construction block exploded in the southern city of Karachi, killing one person, said senior police officer Farooq Awan. Four other people were wounded, he said.
The bomb contained about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of explosives and was detonated by a mobile phone, said Awan.
Pakistan suspended mobile phone service throughout most of the country on Saturday and Sunday to prevent attacks against Shiite Muslims during a major religious commemoration.
Despite the ban, a pair of bombings over the weekend killed at least 13 people.
Awan, the police officer, said he suspected the bomb in Karachi was meant to target Shiites over the weekend, but militants were not able to detonate it at the time because of the mobile phone ban.
Shiites are currently observing the holy month of Muharram. Pakistani Shiites on Sunday marked Ashoura, the most important day of the month.
Pakistan has a long history of Sunni Muslim extremists targeting Shiites, who they consider heretics.
Also Monday, police in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, found and defused a bomb planted underneath the car of one of Pakistan's most prominent TV anchors, Hamid Mir of Geo Television.
The bomb was made up of half a kilogram (1 pound) of explosives stuffed in a tin can, said Islamabad police chief Bani Amin. It was placed in a bag and attached to the bottom of Mir's car, said Amin.
One of Mir's neighbors noticed the bomb underneath the car after the TV anchor returned from a local market, and the police were notified, said Rana Jawad, a senior official at Geo TV.

Rapid changes in climate don't slow some lizards
ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? One tropical lizard's tolerance to cold is stiffer than scientists had suspected. A new study shows that the Puerto Rican lizard Anolis cristatellus has adapted to the cooler winters of Miami. The results also suggest that this lizard may be able to tolerate temperature variations caused by climate change.
"We are not saying that climate change is not a problem for lizards. It is a major problem. However, these findings indicate that the thermal physiology of tropical lizards is more easily altered than previously proposed," said Duke biologist Manuel Leal, co-author of the study, which appears in the Dec. 6 issue of The American Naturalist.
Scientists previously proposed that because lizards were cold-blooded, they wouldn't be able to tolerate or adapt to cooler temperatures.
Humans, however, introduced Puerto Rican native A. cristatellus to Miami around 1975. In Miami, the average temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius cooler in winter than in Puerto Rico. The average summer temperatures are similar.
Leal and his graduate student Alex Gunderson captured A. cristatellus from Miami's Pinecrest area and also from northeastern Puerto Rico. They brought the animals back to their North Carolina lab, slid a thermometer in each lizard's cloaca and chilled the air to a series of cooler temperatures. The scientists then watched how easy it was for the lizards to right themselves after they had been flipped on their backs.
The lizards from Miami flipped themselves over in temperatures that were 3 degrees Celsius cooler than the lizards from Puerto Rico. Animals that flip over at lower temperatures have higher tolerances for cold temperatures, which is likely advantageous when air temperatures drop, Leal said.
"It is very easy for the lizards to flip themselves over when they are not cold or not over-heating. It becomes harder for them to flip over as they get colder, down to the point at which they are unable to do so," he said.
At that point, called the critical temperature minimum, the lizards aren't dead. They've just lost control of their coordination. "It is like a human that is suffering from hypothermia and is beginning to lose his or her balance or is not capable of walking. It is basically the same problem. The body temperature is too cold for muscles to work properly," he said.
Leal explained that a difference of 3 degrees Celsius is "relatively large and when we take into account that it has occurred in approximately 35 generations, it is even more impressive." Most evolutionary change happens on the time scale of a few hundred, thousands or millions of years. Thirty-five years is a time scale that happens during a human lifetime, so we can witness this evolutionary change, he said.
The lizards' cold tolerance also "provides a glimpse of hope for some tropical species," Leal added, cautioning that at present scientists don't know how quickly tolerance to high temperatures -- another important consequence of climate change -- can evolve.
He and Gunderson are now working on the heat-tolerance experiments, along with tests to study whether other lizard species can adjust to colder temperatures.
