6 Steps to Young-Looking, Wrinkle-Free Skin | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

No one is completely safe from getting wrinkles, age spots and other signs of aging, but women tend to want to postpone the aging process for as long as they can so they can enjoy younger skin much longer. We have a tendency to develop skin problems as our bodies age. It?s because our bodies start slowing down in making elastin and collagen, natural substances that the skin needs to maintain its elasticity. Skin can age easily because of environmental factors. For instance, if your skin is exposed for prolonged periods to the sun?s ultraviolet rays, it?s more likely to get wrinkled and lose its suppleness. But there are several things that can prevent premature skin aging, and the great thing is that they don?t necessarily have to involve employing chemical products or unsafe methods.

1. Ensure that you rest enough. It?s best that you sleep 7 hours every night. In case you are always not getting plenty of sleep, this will clearly show in your skin. Lack of sleep brings about dark circles and unsightly bags under your eyes, not to mention cause untimely aging of the skin. It may also cause many other health issues.

2. Buy skin care products that are best for you. First, determine what type of skin you have. For example, women with oily skin often times have to address problems including blackheads and acne, which happen when the pores of the skin are clogged by excessive oil. Consequently, they should be using products which aren?t oil-based. On the flip side, those women who?ve got dry skin are more prone wrinkles and brittleness of the skin. Hence, they must be using moisturizers regularly.

3. Choose all-natural products and solutions. While chemical-based skin care products will deliver great results initially, they will hurt your skin in the long term. If you love your skin and would like to keep it wrinkle-free for as long as possible, it?s best you pick the skin care products that have only natural ingredients.

4. Pick cosmetics and other products that are best suited for your age. Not only will you look silly wearing that teenybopper makeup when you?re a 40-year-old woman, you risk damaging your skin in the process. Know that makeup designed for older women have more Vitamin E and other natural ingredients to promote healthier skin. Age-appropriate makeup is also available in tones that are more complementary to your skin, making you seem youthful.

5. Incorporate working out in your daily program. You could significantly improve your skin?s health and appearance if your circulation is healthy, and one effective way of achieving this is to start exercising regularly. No time to exercise because you have a very busy schedule? It?s not really a reason. You can incorporate working out in your routine. Do you have a garden? There?s your exercise. Do you work on the fifth floor? Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

6. Keep yourself hydrated. If you have wrinkles and lines, it?s likely that your skin isn?t adequately hydrated. It?s impossible to prevent wrinkles; they are going to show up at some time ? but you?d rather they show up later. This can be achieved if you drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water each day. Add in a glass of fresh fruit juice and you?ll make your skin much healthier.

Isis mobile payment system to launch mid-2012, lists Chase, Capitol One, and Barclaycard as partners

Isis

Isis Mobile Wallet, the service backed by AT&T, T-Mobile US, and Verizon has announced new launch partners and it's long awaited trial launch date. New financial partners Chase, Capitol One, and Barclaycard join Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express for the  trials in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah which are expected to begin sometime in mid-2012. Isis isn't sharing much past that, as they say the nationwide rollout will follow the trial with no further details.

Isis partners will allow users to program both credit and debit cards into the mobile system, which gives it another leg up on Google Wallet. Add in the fact that Isis has carrier backing and pre-approval, and chances are that this will be the mobile NFC-based payment system we'll see on our devices when and if it catches on, at least in the US. That doesn't mean Google Wallet will disappear, but being available and being relevant are two different animals.

This doesn't mean that Isis is inherently bad, though. It may turn out to be an excellent product, and I'm excited to give it a try. We have to remember that Google Wallet isn't open and lovable, it is a for-profit venture from Google, much like Isis is a for-profit venture for its backers. When it comes to finances, few things are open and best for the consumer. The best product will be defined by the users and that's the one that will win out.

The full press release follows the break.

Reference and Education: Freudian Basics

Freud is a very interesting and influential character in the history of both psychiatry and psychology. Freud's main contribution is psychoanalysis. Most of his ideas are outdated, disproven, sexist, and overly complex, however, he was correct about some issues. Because of this, very few therapists follow strict Freudian or Neo-Freudian ideology. Freud is usually the first theorist we learn about in high school or undergraduate psychology classes because of his ideas being so fundamental (yet complex), as well as the only complete theory of personality. It is entertaining listening to undergrads breaking everyone and everything down into psychoanalytic terms, but it is good practice and provides a good starting point.

There are many ideas that Freud theorized. We have psychic determinism, psychic conflict and compromise, mental energy, and internal structure for starters. Then we have his stage theory, process thinking, the topographic model, and defense mechanisms. Some theories were created by Neo-Freudians after his death, but are still credited to Freud himself.

I will give some quick definitions to some of his theories here:

Psychic Determinism - The idea that everything that happens has a cause that can be identified.

Psychic Conflict and Compromise - The idea that the mind can conflict with itself, as well as make compromises with itself.

Mental Energy - Psychic energy (libido) required in order for the psychological apparatus of the mind to work.

Internal Structure - The mind (not the brain) has an internal structure made up of parts that can function independently (Id, Ego, Superego).

Oral Stage - Psychological theme of dependence. Predominantly Id.

Anal Stage - Development of the ego begins. Psychological theme is self control and obedience.

Urethral Stage - Transition between anal and phallic stages. Involves issues of control.

Phallic Stage - Oedipus Complex begins. Psychological theme is gender identity and sexuality. Involves development of the superego.

Latency - A psychological break to allow for learning other important tasks.

Genital Stage - Physical focus on genitals. Psychological theme is maturity.

Primary Process Thinking - The way the unconscious mind operates. No concept of the word, 'no'. No consideration of consequences.

Secondary Process Thinking - Conscious thinking. Rational, practical, and prudent thinking. Develops as the ego develops.

Topographic Model - Three levels of consciousness: Unconscious, Preconscious, and Conscious.

Defense Mechanisms:

Denial - Refusal to acknowledge or perceive a source of anxiety.

Repression - Further reaching and longer lasting than denial.

Reaction Formation - Instigates the opposite thoughts, feelings, and impulses.

Projection - Attributing to someone else a thought or impulse that is feared in ones self.

Rationalization - Concocting a seemingly rational case for why you have done something.

Intellectualization - Turn an emotional feeling into an abstract or analytical thought.

Displacement - Replace one object of emotion with another.

Sublimation - Forbidden impulses are transformed into constructive behaviors.

Workplace Safety: Safe Workplace and Safety News: DOL Budget ...

This is the safety news blog for the Safe Workplace web site. We cover workplace safety related news with a focus on how safety, or a lack of safety, impacts employers, employees and their families. We also cover topics such as safety training, safety tools, and legal issues related to safety. For regular safety news and information enter your email address in the box above the Subscribe button to the right (then click on the button).

The Department of Labor held a budget chat session in February. The following is a transcript of the questions directed to OSHA and their answers:

Question From Bob Sheehan: Hello: When is the final rule regarding GHS in the US expected to be adopted?

David Michaels, OSHA: Thank you for your interest in OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). We expect this rule to be published soon. This is a very important rule, which OSHA looks forward to publishing shortly. This rulemaking will align OSHA's HCS with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), which was developed by the United Nations. As discussed in the proposal, this rule will establish a uniform system of labeling and layout for safety data sheets. The training required in the current HCS will be retained.

Question From Christopher Cole:
Could you please explain how the proposal for OSHA whistleblower funding plays into the current ongoing program changes and is this amount in line with completing the planned changes?

David Michaels, OSHA: The significant increase in OSHA whistleblower funding will help the agency address persistent backlogs and heavy and increasing caseloads for its whistleblower investigators.

These increased resources are critical, since many whistleblower provisions, including those related to food safety, health care reform, finance reform, airlines, and railroad safety -- all of which have the potential for a large volume of complaints - have shorter deadlines for respons than the 90-day deadline governing section 11 (c) complaints.

Question From Jason:
While the DOL's Budget brief pints out a drive to boost small businesses, will OSHA change its attitude from "gotcha" to perhaps take a softer approach, such as giving companies a grace period, or levying fines based on employee count as opposed to fixed numbers--so as not to close down small businesses?

David Michaels, OSHA: We always try to work with small businesses to protect employees and our enforcement policies include a reduction of fines, and OSHA also offers free on-site consultation specifically targeted to small businesses.

Question From Ron:
Is VPP being impacted by this budget?

David Michaels, OSHA: In FY 2013, OSHA will continue to recognize worksites that demonstrate safety and health excellence through its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) and will continue to implement initiatives targeting federal agencies, Fortune 500 companies, and the construction industry for VPP participation. The agency anticipates approving 60 new VPPs in FY 2013 and recertifying 280. The agency also plans 18 new partnerships in FY 2013 in high-hazard industries with a focus on safety and health topics that are common causes of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

The Department places great importance on providing compliance assistance for small businesses even in times of austerity. The agency will therefore continue to maintain critical funding support for state compliance assistance which provides direct assistance and consultation services to small businesses. In order to preserve funding for these services targeted to small business, the agency will decrease funding for other outreach and assistance funded through the Federal Compliance Assistance activity.

Question From Kyle Morrison, S+H:
The budget says combustible dust and beryllium NPRMs will come out in FY 2013. If that's the plan, why were those items placed on long-term actions in the most recent Regulatory Agenda?

David Michaels, OSHA: For combustible dust and beryllium the next major action planned will occur after the period covered by the current regulatory agenda.

Question From Stephen Lee:
The budget request calls for a $4.9 million increase for OSHA's whistleblower program, and a $3.2 million decrease for its federal compliance assistance program. Can you comment on these proposals?

David Michaels, OSHA: Although our compliance assistance activities are divided into three budget categories, we view it as a whole, and overall, FY 2013 compliance assistance is 2% above FY 2011. Because of the severe budget constraints we?re facing throughout the federal government, we are tightening our belts in a number of areas and we had to choose among many priorities. In this case, our priority is maintaining the 2012 increases for small business assistance through our state consultation program.

Question From Mary Beth:
Could you elaborate on this line in OSHA's budget? "savings of $2,482,000 and 33 FTE due to reduced federal compliance assistance activity from the consolidation of personnel in geographically dense regions."

David Michaels, OSHA: OSHA has a compliance assistance specialist in every one of its more than 70 area offices. Many of these are situated very close to each other. In order to save money and streamline resources we will be asking some compliance assistance staff to cover a slightly larger area.

Question From Guest:
How can around 1,000 OSHA complianceofficers effectively inspect and regulate over 7,000,000 workplaces (conservative estimate)? What is the long term plan to level the playing field, the math just does not compute?

David Michaels, OSHA: First of all 27 state plans have an additional 1,000 inspectors to cover about half the states. OSHA uses an inspection targeting formula, national and local emphasis programs, partnerships and cooperative programs like VPP to focus attention to where the highest hazards exist.

Question From Chuck:
Will the current budget changes have any effect on the state consultation programs

David Michaels, OSHA: OSHA's free on-site consultation program is OSHA's premiere small business compliance assistance program. OSHA's FY 2013 request is equal to the funding for programs in FY 2012 which is a $3.2 million increase over FY 2011.

Question From Leone.J:
How does this budget effect OSHA? Will you be hiring more Compliance Officers?

David Michaels, OSHA: Under this budget, OSHA will not be hiring more compliance officers however the budget requests funding to hire 37 new whistleblower investigators.

Question From Christopher Cole:
Could you please explain the increase for regulatory support and also, does OSHA expect to receive clearance to publish any new final rules other than GHS this year?

David Michaels, OSHA: OSHA is scheduled to publish three final standards in FY 2012 that include electric power, consultation agreements and confined spaces in construction.

OSHA will also continue its work on silica, injury and illness prevention programs, combustible dust, infectious diseases and other worker protection priorities.

Question From Steve:
How will the 2013 Budget Proposal effect the State Plan States?

David Michaels, OSHA: The FY 2013 budget request for State Plan States maintains the level of funding provided in FY 2012.

Question From Pamela MM:
With the reduction of 33 OSHA Compliance Assistant how will OSHA service our vulnerable workforce

David Michaels, OSHA: Good question. OSHA is maintaining its emphasis on reaching out to vulnerable and hard to reach workers in high risk jobs, as well as small businesses. OSHA will continue its award-winning outreach efforts around such hazards as heat exposure, hearing protection and fall prevention. The cuts outlined in our FY 2013 budget request focus primarily on employer compliance assistance.

Question From Guest:
At 2:50 David Michaels indicated that OSHA would continue work on, among other things, injury and illness prevention plans. Does the 2013 Budget contain specific funding for I2P2 or is this referenced work to be done without specific funding?

David Michaels, OSHA: No, there is no standard-specific funding in the FY 2013 budget. OSHA's standards budget request contained $1 million increase for overall standards work.

Question From Stephen Lee:
Do we know which OSHA regional offices will be eliminated (e.g., will it be Boston or New York)? Also, will OSHA institute sub-regional offices to serve the areas where the offices are being consolidated?

David Michaels, OSHA: No, there are no specific plans on how the regional consolidations will be implemented. OSHA will maintain offices as needed to ensure that safety and health coverage is maintained.

Troops will pay average $350 to ship pets under new United policy

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa ? Military families who are changing duty stations will pay on average $300 to $400 to fly pets back to the U.S. on United Airlines under the policy announced by the airline Wednesday, according to a company spokeswoman.

For many servicemembers, the policy will mean an increase over the current $283 flat fee for pets checked as excess baggage, but it is much less than the $1,440 to $3,869 cargo cost that will be charged to all other United passengers beginning next month.

Military passengers with pets that weigh less than 10 pounds will pay less than the current flat fee, spokeswoman Mary Ryan wrote to Stars and Stripes in an email response.

The airline had planned to charge the full PetSafe cargo fee to servicemembers who make a permanent move back to the U.S. but changed course and announced a special exception earlier this week following thousands of online complaints about the high costs for flying pets.

?The fees for PetSafe depend on the size of the animal and the length of the trip,? Ryan wrote. ?In some cases it will be less than what they paid before ? and in some cases it might be a bit more.?

Under the special military program, servicemembers will continue to check their pets as luggage and will not pay a freight fee, she said.

United is a federal contract carrier that services many Pacific routes, so servicemembers traveling on official duty are often booked to fly on the airline at a reduced cost to the military. The cost to transport pets, however, must be paid by the servicemember.

The change in fees for pets is part of the airline?s merger with Continental Airlines, which is also contracted with the federal government and already charges the cargo fees for pets.

Friends and relatives of Lucas Menghini Rey hold up posters with images of him that reads in Spanish "We are looking for him" as they protest against authorities in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Friday Feb. 24, 2012. Argentine police have identified the 51st victim of Wednesday's train wreck as Lucas Menghini Rey, whose family's desperate search was emblematic of anger at the failure to protect people from long-known safety problems. (AP Photo/Alberto Raggio, DyN)

(AP) ? The discovery of a 51st victim Friday two days after Argentina's deadliest train wreck in decades left the man's family devastated and prompted rock-throwing and other violence by protesters holding vigil at the scene.

The search for 20-year-old Lucas Menghini Rey, whose body was missed in Wednesday's chaotic rescue effort, brought a sharp focus to widespread anger over the crash, which also injured 703 of the 1,500 people on the packed train.

Family and friends collapsed together at the news, while others keeping vigil at the station erupted in anger. Some shouted "throw them all out, not one should remain!" The phrase became iconic during the protests of a decade ago, when public outrage over a failed economy forced a series of presidents to resign.

Riot police responded with tear gas and batons, clearing the station and making arrests. At least one officer was bloodied, and dozens of youths threw objects at passing buses and taxis. Some started small fires and looted stores in the station as Menghini Rey's family and friends left in tears.

The cause remains unclear. The motorman, who could face criminal charges for failing to stop in time, was allowed to go home Friday after giving his statement to the investigative judge, his union's spokesman told the local Diarios y Noticias news agency.

But many commuters are furious that President Cristina Fernandez's government has apparently ignored repeated warnings about inoperable or missing brake equipment and other safety threats. And many suspect corruption and mismanagement contributed to the tragedy.

Menghini Rey hadn't appeared on any lists of dead or injured, about 30 of whom remain hospitalized, and city officials announced Friday that all other passengers had been accounted for. His body was found after Security Minister Nilda Garre personally took over and ordered police back to the wreck, searching "even in the most impossible places," Telam reported.

Inside the station, his family and friends had stacked boxes plastered with his picture and numbers to call, along with the phrase "we are as fragile as cardboard," a feeling shared by many after seeing how the massive train cars crumpled and crushed hundreds of passengers inside.

Menghini Rey's family hadn't seen him since he said goodbye early that morning to his 3-year-old daughter, promising to bring her a toy when he came back from work at a downtown call center, his friend Fernando Diaz told The Associated Press.

But rumors flew that he had survived. One city official even said he had been seen by psychiatrists at a hospital who released him into the streets, and that he might have been suffering from shock and post-traumatic stress.

Argentina's third deadly train accident in less than a year has focused attention on the dilapidated passenger rail system, privatized in 1995 and heavily subsidized by the government since then to keep ticket prices low.

Hard stops are common around the world, rail experts say, so modern cars are designed to avoid the crumpling that can happen when the lead car hits a barrier. But these cars were built decades ago and bought as refurbished castoffs from other urban rail systems.

So when the eight-car train slammed into the end of the line at less than 12 mph (20 kph), a shock-absorbing bumper kept the front of the train intact. , the cars behind it slammed into each other, shoving the second car, with hundreds of people standing inside, deeply into the first. Rescuers had to use Vaseline and cooking oil to untangle the living and dead.

Argentina boasted the continent's most modern trains in the early 20th century, but they were in decline for decades before the system was privatized in the 1990s by President Carlos Menem, who promised much better service.

The family-run Trains of Buenos Aires company got the concession that includes the Sarmiento line. Repeated audits since then determined that the TBA hasn't fulfilled its contract.

The tragedy "is a direct consequence of the failure to comply with basic standards" that were identified in a 2008 report by the nation's Auditor General, said the watchdog office's chief, Leandro Despouy.

That report details multiple problems with brake systems: missing emergency brake levers and inoperable hand brakes and brake cylinders. It was presented that year to the presidency and the congress. No one did anything, complained Despouy, whose main political support comes from a minority party, the Radical Civic Union.

Company officials countered after the crash that their trains are safe, and suggested human error was to blame.

Meanwhile, justice has moved slowly in the case of Ricardo Jaime, who resigned as transportation minister after Argentine media revealed that he had accepted free flights to Brazilian vacations from TBA executives while deciding how much the company would get in government subsidies. He remains outside of jail while awaiting trial on bribery charges.

"Here the blame is shared between the company and the government that fails to control it," said Andres Peralta, a 28-year-old student who signed a leftist group's petition to re-nationalize the trains.

The government said it won't decide on the TBA's future until the courts take action.

Fernandez has been silent since the tragedy, and her ministers have declined to take questions at news conferences on the government response. She left the capital Friday for her home in Calafate, in Argentina's remote Patagonia region. The President of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo, planned to see her there after meeting with survivors from his country.

The president's absence became another sore point on social networks. One Argentine's Twitter message, frequently re-tweeted, said "Mrs. President of the Nation, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, please, come back to Buenos Aires: show that it hurts you as it does us."

Another compared her to Chile's president: Sebastian "Pinera was there until they rescued the last miner. CFK left to Calafate."

Slain soldier's father protests NJ flag-lowering

(AP) ? A western Michigan man whose son was killed while serving in the military has burned a replica of New Jersey's flag to protest that state's decision to lower it in honor of performer Whitney Houston.

John Burri set the flag on fire Saturday on a grill outside his home in Wyoming, near Grand Rapids.

The 60-year-old Burri says lowering flags should be done for men and women who have given their lives in service to the United States.

Army Specialist Eric Burri died in 2005 in Baghdad. Michigan flags were lowered in his honor.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie defended his decision to lower flags for Houston. Christie noted the 48-year-old icon was born in Newark and raised in nearby East Orange.

Houston died Feb. 11 in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Can Religion Be Explained Without God? ? Science and Religion ...

Posted on 17. Feb, 2012 by editor in ANALYSIS, ARCHIVE, ART&COLOUR, STRATEGY

From?Robert Lawrence Kuhn, host and creator ofCloser To Truth:?

I want to believe in God, but ?religion? stops me. I hope God has less to do with religion, and religion with God, than we usually think.
Some claim that religion needs nothing supernatural, that religion, without God, can form and flourish. To others, the claim is blasphemous: God exists and religion is God?s revelation. All agree that religion affects humanity profoundly.
Why is religion a force so powerful? Even those who believe in God should understand how personal psychology and group sociology drive religion.
Philosopher?Daniel Dennett?s book?Breaking The Spelldescribes religion as a ?natural phenomenon.? No one naturalizes religion better than Dennett, who defines it succinctly as ?belief in a supernatural agent or agents whose approval is to be sought.? He suggests that, ?the question of whether God exists is actually of less importance to the modern world than maybe it once was.?
Dennett encourages us ?to think not just historically, but biologically or evolutionarily.? He says, ?We have to realize thatHomo sapiens?us?descended from earlier hominids; we share a common ancestry with chimpanzees going back about 6 million years. Can we see what religion adds to the mix that makes us so different from all other animals??
He thinks that we can. ?I think we can discern religion?s origins in superstition, which grew out of an overactive adoption of the intentional stance,? he says. ?This is a mammalian feature that we share with, say, dogs. If your dog hears the thud of snow falling off the roof and jumps up and barks, the dog is in effect asking, ?Who?s there?? not, ?What?s that?? The dog is assuming there?s an agent causing the thud. It might be a dangerous agent. The assumption is that when something surprising, unexpected, puzzling happens, treat it as an agent until you learn otherwise. That?s the intentional stance. It?s instinctive.?
The intentional stance is appropriate for self-protection, Dennett explains, and ?it?s on a hair trigger. You can?t afford to wait around. You want to have a lot of false positive, a lot of false alarms [because you can?t afford even one false negative!]?
He continues: ?Now, the dog just goes back to sleep after a minute. But we, because we have language, we mull it over in our heads and pretty soon we?ve conjured up a hallucinated agent, say, a little forest god or a talking tree or an elf or something ghostly that made that noise. Generally, those are just harmless little quirks that we soon forget. But every now and then, one comes along that has a little bit more staying power. It?s sort of unforgettable. And so it grows. And we share it with a neighbor. And the neighbor says, ?What do you mean, a talking tree? There?s no talking trees.? And you say, ?I could have sworn that tree was talking.? Pretty soon, the whole village is talking about the talking tree. The talking tree idea has entered the world. It has made multiple copies of itself. Everyone in the village has a copy of the talking tree idea. What?s it for? It?s for itself. It just happened because it could. It?s like a virus.?
He goes on: ?When I first started studying religion, people said, ?Oh, an evolutionary account of religion. What do you think religions are good for, Dan? They?ve got to be good for something [for evolution to have selected it for propagation]. After all, every human group that?s ever been studied has some kind of religion.? And I said, ?Every group that?s ever been studied has the common cold, too. What?s it good for? It?s good for itself. Similarly, these ideas are just good for themselves. They?re good at reproducing in minds.? They start out, as it were, as wild superstitions that happen just because they can. They enter through cracks in our cognitive machinery. Then, they?re around; they can be used. People begin appreciating them; people begin to use them for other purposes?and now we?re on our way to organized religion. And the ones that we see today, the ones which have the big budgets and the big churches, the musical histories and all the rest, those are the hardy survivors of a very large competition.?
Dennett says that, ?If we think about all the features of religions from an evolutionary point of view, we see lots of ?design? features that are otherwise a bit baffling. Were they consciously, deliberately designed by clever priests? For the most part, no. It?s just that the religions that happen to have this ?mutation? did better than the religions that didn?t. And so they were better able to spread themselves.?
To Dennett, religion is explainable by modern methods of social science. And there?s no residual, nothing left hanging: There?s no need, or room, for God.
I like his arguments; I buy them all. But still I wonder: Even if religion as we know it, particularly organized religion, is entirely of human origin, does it then follow that there is no God?
I speak with a theologian who appreciates religion as a social construct, but also believes in God.?J. Wentzel van Huyssteen, an expert on ?theological anthropology,? seeks ancient origins of religion. The core of religion, he says, is ?how to make sense of our own vulnerability of death and suffering,? and religion provides ?great incentives for ethical behavior ? in spite of the many harms it has done.?
To van Huyssteen, ?God is always going to be a deeply personal commitment.? He agrees that ?we can make strong scientific arguments why religion can function perfectly well without God? and that ?for getting God back into the picture, science is not going to be helpful.? And he is ?deeply impressed and overwhelmed by science,? he says, ?but at the same time, do I need to accept that empirical methodology should always have the absolute last word in explaining away religion? Science has no reach beyond the empiricism that it itself professes.?
This is indeed the core issue: In seeking ultimate truth, can we ever be epistemically justified in going beyond empiricism?
Van Huyssteen argues that ?a very clear commitment to religious traditions and to the kind of God or gods that we believe in is not something that ordinary science, such as evolutionary psychology, can explain to me.?
On the other hand, he does not argue that ?the more we find religion, the more likely for God to exist.? He admits that even though ?our ancient ancestors had a clear sense of symbolic activity, ritual, religious faith,? this is not a good argument for the existence of God. Similarly, he says ?people today, the world over, are still religious, and this, too, is not a good argument for God???but it is an argument for what it is that we humans, or most of us, feel we need,? he adds. He then says, ?I?m willing to prune back all kinds of excessive or extravagant beliefs, but I don?t think this goes to the heart of the spiritual sense, which I find to be so important for many people.?
Van Huyssteen agrees with Dennett that religious belief is a natural and continuing human need. But they part ways in that van Huyssteen gives credence to the content of that belief, which, at its core, is a deeply personal connection to the divine. But to do so, he must reach beyond empiricism, venture beyond science.
To psychologist?Susan Blackmore, that?s an egregious error. She is an expert on how certain cultural ideas, called ?memes,? can grow and propagate and take hold of people?s minds. She proffers that religion originated with early cultures wanting control over an uncontrollable world. ?Our ancestors invented spirits,? she says, ?to explain the weather or certain events. That?s the ground of it all, and at some point, there were competing ideas about God?competing memes (which is any information that?s copied from person to person). The idea is to treat cultural products like biological products, all of them in competition. Take songs and jokes and playground games and clothes: The ones we know are the ones that won the competition.?
She continues: ?Religions are like that, too. They compete to infect people?s brains and thus propagate into more people. What makes a successful religion? Originally, perhaps, one that seemed to bring the rain. But at some point, we started some major religions which evolved to have some really, really nasty tricks. So if you look at the major religions on the planet today, particularly the Judeo-Christian traditions, you see the most incredibly well-evolved complexes of memes that hang out together.?
Blackmore takes Christianity?s story of Jesus, from virgin birth to resurrection from the dead, as an example of ?intrinsically unbelievable things.? Why do people go around believing these things, then? The ?very clever packaging,? she answers, which is ?basically a ?copy me? instruction backed up with threats and promises. If you?re a Catholic, you have to learn the catechism all at once. You put on your white dress, you attend the ceremonies, keep the traditions. This discourages people from picking and choosing because once you start to pick and choose, then memes loose their power. If ordinary rationality enters, these things look ludicrous, don?t they??
Blackmore continues: ?You are infected with these ideas when very young, when you have almost no mental immunity, no skills of argument?and it?s heaven if you believe and pass on these ideas to other people, and it?s the hell of toasting forks and pits of sulfur if you don?t. It?s the same in Islam: If you die propagating these memes, you?ll get so many virgins (I don?t know what women get).?
She explains that, ?religious memes are very infectious. There?s room for only one per brain because it encompasses and regulates so much of one?s life. It takes over a whole lot of jobs in your brain?giving you meaning in life, a reason to get up in the morning, a social life. Once you understand how the memes of religion work, you can see the awful effects they have on people and how difficult they are to get rid of.? She concludes with her hope: ?Wouldn?t it be nice if we could just let go of believing in those daft things??
Blackmore sees religion as almost all bad?founded on false, silly promises and empty, vile threats. But because religion is empowered by memes?these infectious, parasitic ideas that lock minds and control belief?it can commandeer belief systems, institutionalize itself, and jump generations.
To explain religion without God, memes are crucial, so I?ll put them to the test. Because memes are analogized to viruses, I speak with?Denis Alexander, a biologist and a believer. How does he defend religion against the explanatory onslaught of memes?
?The meme metaphor has no substrate,? Alexander says. ?We don?t actually absorb ideas, especially complex ideas, as a sort of viral invasion of our brains. The anti-religious rhetoric of the memologists seems kind of like medieval ideas of demonology when people kept their windows closed for fear that demons would come in, infect their brain, and do terrible things to them without their knowing. But in reality, we have beliefs that we have to justify, that we have to give reasons for. And that?s why the memes rhetoric doesn?t work for me.?
Alexander admits that religion does fulfill psychological and sociological needs. ?We are social animals,? he says. ?When a bunch of skeptics and atheists get together to listen to a well-known speaker supporting their skepticism and their atheism, they?ll have group cohesion, they?ll feel good about it, they depart with their belief supported, they feel happier?their atheism has been nurtured by the group. It?s the same when football fans go to a football match. And when people go to church, the same processes are going on. But so what? At the end of the day, none of that tells us about the true status of what?s really going on.?
So whereas religion can be explained without God, the question is: Even though you are explaining it, could there still be a fundamental reality to it?
?All we can do is to give descriptions,? Alexander says. ?We, as scientists, can measure the brainwaves of religious believers, but that doesn?t tell us whether those beliefs are actually true or not. We could do similarly with scientists. We could hook them up, observe their brainwaves, but that wouldn?t tell us whether their scientific theories are true. Truth is based on different kinds of evidence, whether for scientists or religious believers.?
A Christian and a scientist, Alexander agrees that the methods of science can analyze the activities of religion, but disagrees that the findings of science can adjudicate the reality of religion.
As for me, I respect the clarity of categories, differentiating religious behaviors from transcendent truths. But this internal consistency, which generally I like, here shields religion from any assault, making religion impossible to challenge. That I don?t like. Anything impervious to scrutiny troubles me. So in my anxiety, I turn to my favorite skeptic.
Michael Shermer?is an expert on belief systems. ?Religion is a social institution,? he says. ?It can be explained like any other social institution, political institution, or economic institution. It?s just in that same category. You can believe that and still believe in God.?
He continues: ?Where it gets interesting is to examine the reason for religion. What purpose does it serve? Here?s where we begin to see human construction, not only of religion, but of gods. To me, there?s just overwhelming evidence that humans constructed all of this, religion and God, as a belief system. Humans have what I call a ?belief engine??modules in the brain whose function it is to find causal connections between things in the environment. It?s called learning. Everybody does it. You have to do it to survive. All animals do it. We do it spectacularly well.?
But, he says, ?not perfectly well. We are pattern-seeking animals?for example, keeping track of when migrating herds were going to return next year and when the fruit was going to be ripe. Those are patterns that help us survive. However, we also sometimes find patterns that don?t really exist. These are sort of false positives, superstitions. Maybe I believe that if I twirl around three times clockwise and twice counterclockwise, the rain gods will spare us the lightning. So a tendency toward superstition??magical thinking,? we call it?is part of the baggage of being a pattern-seeking animal.?
I ask Shermer why, as science expands and religion contracts in their respective capacities to explain the world, the power of religion is still strong.
?Because the primary function of religion is not to explain the natural world,? he answers. ?It is mainly a social institution. People don?t go to churches, temples, or mosques to hear a lecture about the big bang. They go for some other reason?for family, society, social group, often to hear a message of inspiration about helping other people, doing the right thing, avoiding sin, and so on.?
As for the future of religion, Shermer worries about ?the negative side of religion and its intermixing with politics and social policy.? He says: ?I don?t care what gods people believe in. I?m happy for them if that makes them happy.?
?In a patronizing way?? I ask my friend.
?No. In a respectful way,? he answers. ?Because, ultimately, I can?t prove that my beliefs are absolutely true either. So, hey, you believe what you believe, I believe what I believe, let?s go our separate ways, and can?t we all get along??
Go 10,000 years into the future, or 100,000 years. Assuming humans are reasonably similar, does Shermer see religion still existing in something akin to its current form?
?Yes, probably so,? he responds. ?My secular humanist friends would disagree with me and say, ?Oh, no! Someday we?ll move beyond religion.? Yeah, well, maybe. But it sure doesn?t look that way. The trend is going in the opposite direction.?
Here?s my take. Religion, all of it,?can?be explained without God; nothing supernatural is needed. I?ve not much doubt about this. To account for religious beliefs and behaviors, even those who believe in God should accept this demonstrable truth.
While arguments about God are philosophical and cosmological, those about religion are biological, psychological, and sociological. Thus, the methods of science?can?analyze religion.
But is there residue? After doing all the science, does anything religious remain? This is the ultimate crux of the matter.
Frankly, I can hope, but I don?t know. This I?do?know: Even after explaining religion without God, nothing follows regarding the potential existence of an actual God. No analysis of human religion can ever disconfirm a supreme being.
Conversely, anyone hoping to convince me that God exists should not hold up ?religions of the world? as an affirmative argument. For me, institutional religion offers scant help for coming closer to truth.
