LLC?a good thing
Let?s ignore DBAs, business licenses, zoning laws, and all of the other legal issues that come up when you start your own company and just look at selecting a business entity. It?s an important step that many small new businesses don?t spend enough time on, for the same reason that you have already stated?they don?t think they have enough money to do it right.
There are several different kinds of business entities from which you can choose. You can run your taco truck as a one-man (or woman) show, and be a sole proprietor. You could bring a friend into the business and form a partnership. If you?re really interested in developing this truck into a bigger company, you could also choose to set up a limited liability company (an LLC) or a corporation. Those are your basic options, although there are more out there.
Nine times out of 10, I recommend a limited liability company to entrepreneurs, regardless of their size. An LLC offers you the tax advantage of a sole proprietorship or partnership, with the added benefit of limited personal liability. What?s personal liability, and why do you want to limit it? Well, say Paula Plaintiff orders a taco from your truck and the awning on the truck falls down and hits her on the head, causing serious brain damage. Let?s further assume she sues you for $2 million, a not unreasonable sum considering the
$3 million McDonald?s coffee verdict. Your taco truck is worth $50,000. If Paula can?t be made whole again by taking money from the business, she could go after you personally for the rest ? including your house, your car, and if you?re married, your spouse?s assets also. Now let?s rewind a bit and assume that you have properly set up your business as an LLC. The most Paula could walk away with is what?s in the business ? your taco truck.
Many people think that they don?t need an LLC because they have a good insurance policy. While insurance is important, it will cover you up only to a certain amount. Let?s assume that you have a $1 million policy in the above scenario. Paula would get your taco truck, the $1 million in insurance, and then ?? your house. If you properly limit your personal liability, all Paula would get is the taco truck and the insurance policy.
An LLC is also extremely flexible. You can choose to pass your profits and losses through the company to its members, or you can choose to be taxed like a corporation. LLCs do not have stock like corporations, nor do they observe corporate formalities (like having a board of directors, holding annual shareholders? meetings, issuing stock certificates, keeping minutes, maintaining a corporate record book, etc.).
Corporations are far more complex than the other forms of business and involve more regulations. If you think you may want to set up a corporation, please see an attorney.

Reversing Alzheimer's gene 'blockade' can restore memory, other cognitive functions
ScienceDaily (Feb. 29, 2012) ? MIT neuroscientists have shown that an enzyme overproduced in the brains of Alzheimer's patients creates a blockade that shuts off genes necessary to form new memories. Furthermore, by inhibiting that enzyme in mice, the researchers were able to reverse Alzheimer's symptoms.
The finding suggests that drugs targeting the enzyme, known as HDAC2, could be a promising new approach to treating the disease, which affects 5.4 million Americans. The number of Alzheimer's victims worldwide is expected to double every 20 years, and President Barack Obama recently set a target date of 2025 to find an effective treatment.
Li-Huei Tsai, leader of the research team, says that HDAC2 inhibitors could help achieve that goal, though it would likely take at least 10 years to develop and test such drugs.
"I would really strongly advocate for an active program to develop agents that can contain HDAC2 activity," says Tsai, director of the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT. "The disease is so devastating and affects so many people, so I would encourage more people to think about this."
Tsai and her colleagues report the findings in the Feb. 29 online edition of Nature. Lead author of the paper is Johannes Gr?ff, a postdoc at the Picower Institute.
Genome modification
Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a family of 11 enzymes that control gene regulation by modifying histones -- proteins around which DNA is spooled, forming a structure called chromatin. When HDACs alter a histone through a process called deacetylation, chromatin becomes more tightly packaged, making genes in that region less likely to be expressed.
HDAC inhibitors can reverse this effect, opening up the DNA and allowing it to be transcribed.
In previous studies, Tsai had shown that HDAC2 is a key regulator of learning and memory. In the new study, her team discovered that inhibiting HDAC2 can reverse Alzheimer's symptoms in mice.
The researchers found that in mice with Alzheimer's symptoms, HDAC2 (but not other HDACs) is overly abundant in the hippocampus, where new memories are formed. HDAC2 was most commonly found clinging to genes involved in synaptic plasticity -- the brain's ability to strengthen and weaken connections between neurons in response to new information, which is critical to forming memories. In the affected mice, those genes also had much lower levels of acetylation and expression.
"It's not just one or two genes, it's a group of genes that work in concert to control different phases of memory formation," Tsai says. "With such a blockade, the brain really loses the ability to quickly respond to stimulation. You can imagine that this creates a huge problem in terms of learning and memory functions, and perhaps other cognitive functions."
The researchers then shut off HDAC2 in the hippocampi of mice with Alzheimer's symptoms, using a molecule called short hairpin RNA, which can be designed to bind to messenger RNA -- the molecule that carries genetic instructions from DNA to the rest of the cell.
With HDAC2 activity reduced, histone acetylation resumed, allowing genes required for synaptic plasticity and other learning and memory processes to be expressed. In treated mice, synaptic density was greatly increased and the mice regained normal cognitive function.
"This result really advocates for the notion that if there is any agent that can selectively down-regulate HDAC2, it's going to be very beneficial," Tsai says.
The researchers also analyzed postmortem brains of Alzheimer's patients and found elevated levels of HDAC2 in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex, which play important roles in memory storage.
Reversing the blockade
The findings may explain why drugs that clear beta-amyloid proteins from the brains of Alzheimer's patients have offered only modest, if any, improvements in clinical trials, Tsai says.
Beta-amyloid proteins are known to clump in the brains of Alzheimer's patients, interfering with a type of cell receptor needed for synaptic plasticity. The new study shows that beta amyloid also stimulates production of HDAC2, possibly initiating the blockade of learning and memory genes.
"We think that once this epigenetic blockade of gene expression is in place, clearing beta amyloid may not be sufficient to restore the active configuration of the chromatin," Tsai says.
The appeal of HDAC2 inhibitors, Tsai says, is that they could conceivably reverse symptoms even after the blockade is well-established. However, much more drug development has to take place before such a compound could enter clinical trials. "It's really hard to predict," Tsai says. "Clinical trials would probably be five years down the line. And if everything goes well, to become an approved drug would probably take at least 10 years."
Some general HDAC inhibitors, not specific to HDAC2, have been tested in clinical trials as cancer drugs. However, to treat Alzheimer's, a more selective approach is needed, Tsai says. "You want something as selective as possible, and as safe as possible," she says.

Homeschooling Sports 'Tebow Bill' Making Headway in Virginia
House Bill No. 947 is only 185 words long, but it?s generating thousands of words of heated opposition in advance of its scheduled March 1 hearing by the Virginia State Senate.
The bill ? dubbed informally the ?Tebow Bill? in reference to football standout Tim Tebow?s homeschooling pedigree ? would allow homeschooled students to participate in public school sports in Virginia. Opposed to the bill are the Virginia Home School League, the Virginia Association of School Superintendents and the Virginia Education Association. A common argument against the bill is that it disadvantages state students who have less time to focus on training and more rigorous testing of academic eligibility.
The concern instead is about unfair competition. Student athletes are subject to a host of requirements regarding their academic progress and behavior. The academic requirements include course grade and GPA standards across the entire curriculum and on a quarterly or semester basis?. annual academic progress for home-schoolers can be demonstrated by passing the math and language arts sections of a national standardized test at the 23 percentile. Thus, home-schooled students don?t have to master the same breadth of subject material as public-school students and don?t have to show the same consistency in performance.
Other opposition is more direct in its moral condemnation of home-schooling. VHSL executive director Ken Tilley said,
?We?re not opposed to home school as education alternative. But don?t turn around and ask to receive these opportunities and privileges when you?re turning your back on public education.?
However, the hopes of stopping the bill expressed by these groups may be futile. Twenty-five states already allow home schooled children to take part in state school sports to some degree, and this number only seems to be increasing as prejudices against homeschooling melt away and it becomes a more mainstream and socially acceptable alternative to state schools. House Bill No. 947 has already passed the Virginia House of Delegates earlier this month in convincing fashion. The 59-39 vote was split roughly along party lines with Republican Governor Bob McDonnell a chief advocate actively encouraging support of the bill.
Although the 40 member Virginia State Senate is evenly split, the bill is widely expected to pass again as Republican Lt. Gov Bill Bolling holds the tie-breaking vote. Governor McDonnell has already vowed to sign the bill into law if it reaches his desk.
The bill is informally called the ?Tebow Bill? by supporters for good reason. The success of the Denver Bronco?s phenom has shined a spotlight on the issue of home school student?s exclusion in other states. Tebow campaigns for equal access to high school athletics so other promising students aren?t denied the opportunities he had just because they live in the wrong state. Another successful athlete given his chance to succeed at high school level as a home school athlete was New York Jets defensive end Jason Taylor who had to fight a legal battle in 1994 to retain his scholarship when it was revoked because of his home-school background.
Virginia Delegate Rob Bell, who introduced the bill, pointed out that many of the arguments against his bill are irrational as in Virginia there are some non-home schooled students who have never stepped inside a public school classroom, but who still play sports for public schools.
?There are students who take classes at local colleges, and even online classes, that never attend their high school, but they get to play high school sports. Only home schooled students are barred from participation.?

Homeschooling with Technology ? Cheeky Magpie
I haven?t discussed homeschool in some time. We?ve got a bit of a routine down so it?s a lot more fluid than it was last year or even earlier this year. That?s the funny thing about taking on a task of such magnitude. You end up learning a lot in the process.

I started keeping track of homeschool educational links in an iPad app called Pearltrees. It?s a hyperbolic linking system with an interactive link browser. It?s also available on Mac and PC though I mostly use it on the iPad. One of the things I really like about it is that it gives me the option to browse similar links. In this screen shot, you can see the related links I discovered off of my own subject of homeschool. As a result, I?ve found some great resources posted by other people. If I zoomed out I?d see hundreds more links like mine!

If you have an iPad, there?s a great must-read blog:? Apps in Education. And while I don?t use my iPad as a teacher in a traditional classroom, I find great information that fits our homeschooling lifestyle. I tend to lean more toward the productivity and reference apps over educational subjects, but that?s just how my brain works.
A friend told me about Currclick, a great site for all sorts of curriculum. It?s a must visit place for unit based Studies. I really like Hands of a Child and Intellego Unit Studies. Hands of a Child offers lapbooks for older kids on subjects like Astronomy and Botany and Intellego has in depth studies in subjects like Electricity and Magnetism and the Middle Ages. I really like the mix of reading, interactive content, videos, and hands on experiments. And I love that the content is checked regularly and links are updated. The kids don?t get bored and it?s geared toward their learning level. Curriclick?has saved me a lot of time (and stress). I can?t believe I was creating my own units not that long ago.
We have two android tablets for the boys to use for school. I load curriculum in pdf form on the tablets to save on printing out pages. using an e-reader they can bookmark, highlight, and look-up words as we work through the subject. I have a strict no games on tablets policy though. I think of the tablets as textbooks or a classroom. I want to keep the distractions out.
I don?t think I?d be as successful at homeschooling without the technology. I know some of you must be rolling your eyes, but this is where we are comfortable, in the realm of the geek. We are using these resources as tools to help us learn better. The hardest part is wading through the options to find what you want and need to help you kids learn better. And there?s no shortage of options.
