Former Millington mayor says he'll beat bribery charges

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) ? Former Millington Mayor Richard Hodges faced new bribery charges in court Thursday.

Hodges didn't have much to say in court, but said he'll be ready to tell his side of the story after he beats the charges against him.

Hodges made?his first appearance?in?criminal court on three new charges of bribery.

While the former mayor, who's been indicted five times in less than five months, had no comment as he left court, he promised that would change.

"Real soon I will have comments," he said.

Hodges was arrested on charges of soliciting money in exchange for political favors, following a raid at his home and office at Millington City Hall last October.

The charges are all connected to gambling that investigators say occurred at his co-defendant Marlin Roberts' repair shop.

Roberts also faces bribery and drug indictments.

District Attorney Amy Weirch says Hodges' old indictments will be replaced by the new charges.

"These are what we call superseding indictments and then there's one new one and they were put on kind of the same bond that was already posted," she said. "So there's really no reason for re-arrest."

Hodges' sat down with Action News 5 after an early departure from office in January. He blamed bad judgment in friends for his recent troubles

"My momma told me a long time ago, ?When you run with dogs you'll get flees on you,'" he said.

Thursday, he continued to profess his innocence.

"The truth will come out."

Bribery of a public servant is a felony that carries a sentence ranging from 8 to 30 years.

Hodges is due back in court April 16.
