Jamaica braces for heavy rain as TS Ernesto nears

This NOAA satellite image taken Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 01:45 PM EDT shows Tropical Storm Ernesto now about 295 miles south-southeast of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic with maximum sustained winds up to 50 mph. This system shows some weakening as it continues on a westward path at 18 mph. Meanwhile in the north, an area of low pressure over the Bahamas produces more showers and thunderstorms that reach into Florida. This system has a low, 10% chance of tropical cyclone development. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Ernesto churned westward across the central Caribbean early Sunday, heading for a pass south of Jamaica that could bring several inches of rain to the island.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 5 a.m. EDT Sunday that Ernesto was centered about 240 miles (385 km) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica. Ernesto has maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph (85 kph) and is moving westward at 22 mph (35 kph).

The center says recently formed Tropical Storm Florence, far out in the Atlantic, had stopped strengthening early Sunday. That storm has top sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph) and is 680 miles (1,090 km) west of the Cape Verde Islands.

The center says Florence is expected to resume strengthening in the next day or so.
