As I mentioned in an earlier post, one of the ways I wanted to spend some time during break was focusing on my health.? The holidays are over, and (unfortunately) the season for sugary-sweet baked treats and candy are over.? But how can I better my body without the bank account to go with it?? Gym memberships are a lot of money, and a salad can even run you nearly $12.? New York is undeniably expensive, but if you?re tactful enough, you can definitely find ways around the costs.
Cooking
Eating out can take its toll?not only on your bank account, but also your body.? While the New York food scene has a lot to offer, it?s definitely healthier to make your own food.? If you live in the Stuyvestant, Loeb, 20th St, or Williams St residence halls, keep in mind you?ll have a kitchen, so take advantage of it!? I?ve restocked my fridge and finally gave my kitchen the lovin? it deserves since I?ve neglected it during finals.? Even though it?s not the best season for vegetables, it?s helping me extend my culinary skills.? This frigid winter is a great reason to make some hearty lentil stew or a healthy chicken noodle soup!? Boil some vegetables, chicken breasts, and whole-grain egg noodles in some reduced-sodium chicken stock, and you?ve got a warm, healthy, and inexpensive meal that?s super easy to make.? Yum!
Yoga
Before this break, I?ve never taken a yoga class.? I didn?t think that moving through a bunch of poses could be even remotely close to a hard workout?but man, was I wrong.? I was dripping with sweat after my first session, and after that, I was hooked!? I?ve been going to this great studio called Yoga to the People, which is located nearby campus on St. Marks Place.? I also frequent the Brooklyn location, which is closer to my apartment.? The best part about YTTP?it?s completely donation based!? You can pay $10, $5, or nothing; it all depends on how much you want to give.? YTTP is welcoming to beginners like me, yet still challenging to experienced yogis.? It?s a great way to exercise and relieve stress at the same time, and with sessions offered throughout the day, I definitely plan on working it into my schedule once classes start up again next week.
Recreation & Intramural Sports
The New School?s Office of Recreation and Intramural Sports offers a variety of fitness classes, organized sports teams, and other recreational events.? The first Friday of every month, the Recreation Office organizes a trip to go indoor rock climbing at Brooklyn Boulders.? Before starting college, I used to go to a local climbing gym with some of my friends.? It was great to finally get back on the walls!? The Rec Office covers the cost of admission AND gear rental, so it was free!? Besides free events like indoor rock climbing, the Rec Office also hosts a myriad of other trips throughout the semester like whitewater rafting and hiking at a discounted price.? Feel free to check out their blog as well!
Cheers to a healthy and prosperous 2013!
