Father who lost daughter in suicide attack to Israelis: Vote for peace?
Noam Sheizaf, +972 Magazine?1/17/2013
????? I am voting, but I will not be endorsing any party in the upcoming elections (I wrote about for whom and how I think Israelis should vote here). Instead, I am posting a message that Rami Elhanan posted on his Facebook wall yesterday, beneath the pictures of his 14-year-old daughter who was killed in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem, and of Palestinian Abir Aramin, 10, who was shot to death by soldiers near her school.
???? ?Today, 6 years ago, 10 years old Abir Aramin was murdered outside her school in Anata. Border police ?fighter? shot a rubber bullet in her back, no reason?
???? ?6 long and agonizing years have passed since we and the Combatants for Peace were standing by her bedside in Hadassah hospital, 6 years that the ?most moral army in the world? has failed to find and bring to justice even one of those responsible?
???? ?6 years in which the occupation authorities continued killing of innocent people without charge ? no law and no judge ? Time after time after time, a circle of blood with no end and no purpose ? And yesterday another Palestinian kid, 17 ? the fourth this week! Thousands of innocent victims since Abir?s death?
???? ?For 6 years I have been thinking about Abir. All the time.
???? ?For 6 years I remember and remind about this innocent pure girl that never ever did any wrong to anyone.
???? ?I remember her, and I remember whoever killed her ? a victim like her ? both victims of the occupation.
???? ?For 15 years I have been thinking about Smadar. All the time?.? ? See also:?Combatants for Peace?and?Rami Elhanan?s Facebook wall?more..?e-mail

A tale of a city split into two?
Ahmad Abu Rtema, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)?1/16/2013
????? I was born in the border city of Rafah between Egypt and Palestine. Rafah has a story of human suffering that people ought to know about. It was once a single city, but has now become two; one is Egyptian, where I was born, and the other Palestinian, where I was raised. They are split apart by political borders, but the ties of blood and soul cannot be severed no matter how many years pass.?
???? People have never known but one Rafah, for the same families have lived on both sides. They lived on its land and were free to reside wherever they wanted; they married and built strong social bonds without the existence of boundaries as both Rafahs were under the rule of Egypt. Then, in the 1967 war, they were both occupied by Israel which is how Rafah stayed united.
???? However, once the Camp David agreement was signed between the Egyptian and Israeli regimes in 1979, it mandated that a barbed wire cut through Rafah and split it into two. This clause was put into effect on April 25th, 1982, when Mubarak?s reign began. Here is where one of the chapters of the continuous human suffering begins.
???? The barbed wire extended through houses, land, and property. It even split houses into two with one of the rooms in Egypt and the other in Palestine, as it did to Haj Abdulqader Al-Sha?aer?s house. Families were torn apart and displaced on either side of the border, placing a father in Egypt and his son in Palestine; a brother here and his brother there; a mother here and her children there. Here is where politics proved how detached it is from all feeling and humanity.?more..?e-mail

Will 3rd Intifada replicate the 1st??
Daoud Kuttab, Arabic Media Internet Network (AMIN)?1/17/2013
????? Israeli security officials have been unable to clearly identify what is happening in the occupied state of Palestine, as the lack of a credible peace process leaves a big vacuum.
???? Early in January, Colonel Yaniv Alaluf told soldiers the third Intifada has already begun. His statement, which was reproduced in Arab and Israeli media, was intended to reflect the state of uneasiness and unrest the Palestinians are feeling as the window of hope and opportunity quickly shuts down for the young Palestinian population.
???? While Alaluf?s statement might not be reflected in any major way in the level of violence in the occupied West Bank, it could be true in ways that the Israeli commander probably never realised.
???? As the level of Palestinian-Israeli security cooperation continues to produce record number of relatively quiet days in occupied Palestine, a totally different form of Intifada is seeing the light of day. And the Israelis are clearly unequipped and totally unready for it.
???? There are more and more signs that a possible third Intifada will not look anything like Al Aqsa Intifada, in 2000, but more like the initial 1987 protests that gave the world the name Intifada.
???? This week?s creative and disciplined actions by young and unaffiliated Palestinian men and women resemble very much the creativity and experimentation that had been the hallmark of the first Intifada.
???? Using a novel by Lebanese writer Elias Khoury, these young Palestinians put to shame the self-declared leaders of Palestine liberation and resistance.?more..?e-mail

Israel?s ?foreign policy of deception? documented in new book?
Rod Such, Electronic Intifada?1/16/2013
????? Avi Raz?s?The Bride and the Dowry: Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinians in the Aftermath of the June 1967 War?is a meticulous examination of the two-year period that followed Israel?s occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Gaza and the Syrian Golan Heights.
???? It is notable for a number of reasons: its documentation of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians that occurred during and after the war and its exposure of a policy of deliberate lying to conceal Israel?s real aims in the newly occupied territories. And perhaps most importantly, its virtually unassailable argument that Israeli policymakers never intended to relinquish the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which it promptly annexed, and contemplated annexing Gaza.
???? Also notable are the disclosure that Israeli officials acknowledged that the annexation of East Jerusalem and the construction of settlements in the West Bank violated international law, and Raz?s depiction of the US government?s steady supply of arms and political support to Israel during this period.
???? Raz is a former Israeli journalist turned historian who is now a member of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Oxford University in England. The title of the book derives from an infamous quote by Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, Israel?s prime minister during that time, who referred to the West Bank and Gaza as the ?dowry? Israel won in the 1967 War: ?The trouble is that the dowry is followed by a bride [the Palestinians] whom we don?t want,? Eshkol said.
???? As Raz shows, Israel wasted little time in attempting to get rid of as many ?brides? as it could without provoking an international furor. As early as the third day of the war, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan told Lt. Gen. Yitzhak Rabin ?that the aim was to empty the West Bank of its inhabitants.?more..?e-mail

The Palestinian Prisoners? Intifada
Palestine Chronicle: 17 Jan 2013 ? By Ramzy Baroud If Palestinian leaders only knew how extraneous their endless rounds of ?unity? talks have become, they might cease their enthusiastic declarations to world media about yet another scheduled meeting or another. At this point, few Palestinians have hope that their ?leadership? has their best interests in mind. Factional interests reign supreme and personal agendas continue to define Palestine?s political landscape. Fatah and Hamas are the two major Palestinian political factions. Despite Hamas?s election victory in 2006, Fatah is the chief contender. Both parties continue to play the numbers game, flexing their muscles in frivolous rallies where Palestinian flags are overshadowed with green and yellow banners, symbols of Hamas and Fatah respectively. Historically there has been a leadership deficit in Palestine and it is not because Palestinians are incapable of producing upright men and women capable of guiding the decades-long resistance towards astounding victory against military occupation and?more

Palestinian Unity ? Israel?s Nemesis
Palestine Chronicle: 17 Jan 2013 ? By Vacy Vlazna Nemesis: ?the inescapable agent of someone?s or something?s downfall.? Imagine Israel faced with a united front of every Palestinian who exists. Pro-Palestinian activists around the world shout from their hearts to the sky, to their governments, to Israel, ?In our hundreds, in our millions, we are all Palestinians?. This cry of oneness in justice, in solidarity, the cry of the unity of a human family transcending space and borders contrasts the fracture, to Israel?s Machiavellian advantage, of Palestinian society in Occupied Palestine, in Israel, that overspills into the purgatory of Diasporan camps. Divide and rule, divide et impera, is an age-old strategy that weakens and fractures potential power alliances. Its only collaborator is self-interest. The Arabs have fallen for it since the Sykes-Picot Agreement? when imperialist France and Britain? divided up the Arab provinces of the Ottoman? Empire. The US deftly executed it in Iraq. Forbes Most Powerful People Deception
Palestine Chronicle: 17 Jan 2013 ? By Ivan Simic Every year we have the opportunity to read Forbes ?the World?s Most Powerful People? list which is showing us who, by Forbes opinion, is the most powerful in the world. However, as years goes by this list is becoming more of a comic story then the reality. Somehow Forbes cannot accept the reality that there is no definition or criteria to determine the most powerful person in the world. What Forbes does is they measure power of an individual along four dimensions: Whether the candidate has power over lots of people, assess the financial resources controlled by each person, determine if the candidate is powerful in multiple spheres, and make sure that the candidates actively used their power. When Forbes uses the word ?Powerful? what exactly does it means? According to a definition there are many meanings of powerful, such as; having or capable of exerting power,?more

Your Nakba, and Mine ? A Poem
Palestine Chronicle: 17 Jan 2013 ? By Ramzy Baroud When your grandfather deserted his horse At the lower edge of the Pacific My family?s steed was still grazing By the southern hills of Palestine Your Nakba started before mine But mine is yet to end. Your name is molded to mean many things And signify nothing Mine is ?gun powder? The bones of my ancestors keep the mountains of Galilee standing My cousins are the ones holding the Gaza fort Against the invading Khazars.
