College Education is an Investment

Here in the third article of the -College Scholarships for College Sophomore- series I want to discuss looking at your college education as an investment. Everything in life we spend money on is an investment in some way or form. Some types of investments are our cars, houses, land, investment funds and even our education.

Looking at college as an investment can give the correct perspective to students to how much their education is worth. For example, when buying a house you look for houses you like and the price range you can afford for the next twenty years. Think of your college education in the same terms:

What are your expectations?

How much can you afford?

Is it worth the investment?

Is now the right time to go to college?

So many students have been taught they must go to a four year college right after high school. If you are Looking for scholarships for college students, there are plenty available. Is this true? Not at all!

Taking a year off or simply going to a community college is a great way to not overwhelm yourself with high tuition prices right after high school but discover what career you really want to pursue. We don?t buy a house unless we know what we are look for and no one buys a house they can?t afford, so why treat your college education different?

Things to do before going to a four-year university:

First, get your feet a little wet. Find out what your interests are and seeing if there are any career fields in those areas. Try to find a job around those career fields or even job shadow if no jobs are available. I sincerely recommend student to experience desired career fields before spend four years and thousands of dollars to find out it really isn?t what you thought it was. Take a year off or work part-time while going to a community college to find the right career for you.

Second, take a couple classes in that field. Why are so many college students wasting their electives on art, physical education and goof-off classes when they are trying to figure out what they want to do the rest of their lives? I?ve heard college is a place to find yourself, so find yourself by taking classes that interest you and not by goofing around and partying every night.

Last, save up for the long and expensive road towards a college education. With tuition prices continually rising and educational funding down the drain, saving for college is a must to keep yourself out of debt. Of course there is good debt and bad debt but like my dad always told me; too much of a a good thing turns into a bad thing. College students are taking out more loans than ever before and more college graduates are claiming bankruptcy because they can?t pay off all their debt. Save as much money as you can in high school, years off of school and during college because a college education is not worth bankruptcy.

Is College Worth It?

The average college graduate makes a million dollars more than the average high school graduate, according to Business Week. Examples of bad investments are: when student go to a four year college and get a degree that could be earned at a community college, receiving a degree and not working in that career field or spend thousands of dollars and not knowing what you want to do. This is especially important for college sophomores because declaring your degree is just around the corner.

Make our college investment a a good one by receiving the degree that will ensure your desired career field and know how much debt you can have after college so you don?t overwhelm yourself with loans payments.
